Geomophologic features (fractures, canyons, seamounts) on the North Atlantic
Distribution of three geomorphologic features (fracture zones, canyons, and seamounts) on the North Atlantic (18°N to 76°N and 36°E to 98°W). Source vector data originated from the GEBCO Gazetteer of Undersea Features Names for fractures, Harris & Whiteway (2011) for canyons, and Yesson et al. (2011) for seamounts. The presence (value=1) of fracture zones or seamounts and the total length of canyons (in km, independently for shelf-incising or blind canyons) was extracted in 25km * 25km gridsquares.
This dataset was built to feed a basin-wide spatial conservation planning exercise, targeting the deep sea of the North Atlantic. The goal of this approach was to identify conservation priority areas for Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs) and deep fish species, based on the distribution of species and habitats, human activities and current spatial management.

- Statement
- Source vector data originated from the GEBCO Gazetteer of Undersea Features Names for fractures (IHO-IOC 2019), Harris & Whiteway (2011) for canyons, and Yesson et al. (2011) for seamounts. The data was extracted in 25km * 25 km gridsquares of the raster grid used for the ATLAS spatial prioritization. Source data reference: Harris, P. T., & Whiteway, T. (2011). - Description
- Source vector data originated from the GEBCO Gazetteer of Undersea Features Names (www.gebco.net) for fractures, Harris & Whiteway (2011) for canyons ( https://doi.org/10/bjnm2f ), and Yesson et al. (2011) for seamounts (https://doi.org/10/d8g2c6). Fractures and canyons data consisted in spatial lines, and seamounts in spatial points. The canyons dataset gathered three types of canyons: shelf-incising canyons having heads with a clear bathymetric connection to a major river system; shelf-incising canyons with no clear bathymetric connection to a major river system; and blind canyons incised onto the continental slope. The two types of shelf-incising canyons were pooled together.
- Rationale
- initial datasets sources and filtering
- Description
- Using the R environment, the rasterize function was used to extract the presence (fractures and seamounts) and the total length of canyons (in km), for shelf-incising canyons and for blind canyons, in 25km *25km gridsquares. Values of output raster cells where no fracture, seamounts or canyons were present were set to 0, while values of cells out of the study zone were set to NA.
