SURATLANT: a surface dataset in the central part of the North Atlantic subpolar gyre
The SURATLANT dataset (SURveillance ATLANTique) consists of individual data of temperature, salinity, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and its isotopic composition d13CDIC, total alkalinity (At), inorganic nutrients and water stable isotopes (δ18O and δD) collected mostly from ships of opportunity since 1993 along transects between Iceland and Newfoundland (shipping company EIMSKIP), as well as, since 2014, between west Greenland and Danemark (shipping company RAL). The data have been validated, qualified, and their accuracy and the overall characteristics of the data set are presented in a paper (Reverdin et al., 2018).
The csv file provides a listing of the data with one line for each collection date. This includes collection date, position, temperature, salinity, and the measured, validated and in some cases adjusted variables, as well as a quality code following WOCE/GLODAP format. For water isotopes and isotopic composition of inroganic carbon, a code is also provided indicating the method of measurement used.
An additional text-file provides a normalized average seasonal cycle of the 10 variables measured in 5 boxes between the vicinity of Newfoundland to the south-west of Iceland (corresponding to the figure 3 of the paper Reverdin et al in the References). Format and information is provided in the top 25 lines and the gridded seasonal cyle data start at line 26.

- Surface data have been collected since 1993 by more than one hundred volunteer ship riders that boarded merchant vessels run or leased by EIMSKIP between Iceland and Newfoundland, and more recently by RAL between west Greenland and Denmark. The project was initiated with initial support from LDEO (Columbia University). NOAA/AOML and NOAA/CPO Ocean Observing and Monitoring Division have provided XBT probes and maintained the thermosalinographs on ships operating between Iceland and Newfoundland, whereas SNO SSS as well as the University of Bergen contributed for the equiment on ships between west Greenland and Newfoundland. The French effort was supported by various agencies since 1995, and in particular INSU for SNO SSS and by the LEFE/CYBER grant CO2SINK in 2016-2019 as well as IPEV. Christian Brunet and Jonathan Fin of SNAPOCO2 analyzed most DIC/At at LODYC/LOCEAN since 2001, with additional analyses at NOAA/AOML (USA) and Univ. Bergen (No). The isotopic platform of OSU Ecce Terra measured delta13C-DIC, as well as water stable isotopes at LOCEAN since 2010, with additional support by the National Power Company of Iceland Landsvirkjun. Collaboration between French and Icelandic investigators was supported by PHC Jules Verne 2016 grant 36187YF, and nutrients as well as salinity samples have been mostly analyzed at the Marine institute of Iceland. Support to Virginie Racapé (by LOCEAN, LSCE and then IFREMER) and Marion Benetti (LOCEAN, University of Iceland in Reykjavik) is acknowledged. Support from the European Integrated Project CARBOOCEAN (511176),the SOERE GreatGases, IR ICOS, SNO SSS, SNO COOL and IPSL is also acknowledged. The carbon measurements in Norway were funded through ICOS Norway (Integrated Carbon Observing System Norway, phase 2, Research Council of Norway, grant no. 296012). Associated datasets including continuous seawater pCO2 and SST data and semi-continuous atmospheric xCO2 data are in the SOCAT database and the ICOS Carbon Portal.
