Coastal Surveillance Through Observation of Ocean Color (COASTlOOC) oceanographic expeditions were conducted in 1997 and 1998 to examine the relationship between the optical properties of seawater and related biological and chemical properties across the coastal-to-open ocean gradient in various European seas. A total of 379 stations were visited along the coasts of the Gulf of Lion in the Mediterranean Sea (n = 61), Adriatic Sea (n = 39), Baltic Sea (n = 57), North Sea (n = 99), English Channel (n = 85) and Atlantic Ocean (n = 38). Particular emphasis was dedicated to the collection of a comprehensive set of apparent (AOPs) and inherent (IOPs) optical properties to support the development of ocean color remote sensing algorithms. The data were collected in situ using traditional ship-based sampling, but also from a helicopter, which is a very efficient means for that type of coastal sampling. The dataset collected during the COASTlOOC campaigns is unique in that it is fully consistent in terms of operators, protocols, and instrumentation. This rich and historical dataset is still today frequently requested and used by other researchers. Therefore, we present the result of an effort to compile and standardize a dataset which will facilitate its use in future development and evaluation of new bio-optical models adapted for optically-complex waters.

The Mediterranean Sea is generally described as an oligotrophic area where primary productivity is limited to a few coastal environments with nutrient-enriched fluvial input. However, several studies have revealed that the hydrology of the western Mediterranean has major seasonal productive patterns linked either to significant riverine input or to seasonal upwelling cells. This study aims to: i) discuss organic microfossils (i.e. pollen and dinoflagellate cyst assemblages, as well as other non-pollen palynomorphs) from two different productive areas of the western Mediterranean Sea, and ii) examine the importance of the interconnections between marine and continental influences responsible for modern palynomorph distributions. Based on 25 samples from the Gulf of Lion (GoL) and Algerian Margin, this study key findings are: i) that GoL marine productivity is driven by the combination of discharges from the Rhône River and seasonal upwelling mechanisms, ii) that the strong productive pattern of the northern African coast is driven by water density front mixings and related upwellings. These two patterns are discussed in the light of major links that provide a better understanding of the signatures of marine and continental bio-indicators. The dinocyst Lingulodinium machaerophorum can be considered as a tracer of Rhône River plume influence in the GoL. Brigantedinium taxa are shown to be upwelling-sensitive in both studied areas. Typical differences in vegetation across the north–south climate gradient in the western Mediterranean Basin are highlighted by the larger ratio of Euro-Siberian to Mediterranean pollen taxa in the northern sector. Synoptic maps also illustrate the complex interactions of environmental drivers determining the distributions of continental and marine palynomorphs in the western Mediterranean Sea.

There are at least a dozen small hyper-turbid estuaries facing the Bay of Biscay, geographically situated between the two major estuaries of the Gironde and the Loire. MAGEST and SYVEL high-frequency multi-site monitoring revealed that the Loire, and to a lesser extent the Gironde, are subject to summer hypoxia. These observations raised the question of the potential occurrence of hypoxia in the small estuaries in between, motivating an investigation of dissolved oxygen in one of them, the Charente estuary. Oxygen and salinity sensors were placed at L'Houmée (2019), Tonnay-Charente (2018; 2019), Rochefort (2020; 2021; 2022), Martrou (2020) during summer, the most critical period for dissolved oxygen; a multiparameter probe was placed at Tonnay-Charente from April to November 2020. Longitudinal investigations along the estuary axis were also carried out during the summers of 2018 and 2019. All the measurements were acquired at 0.5 ± 0.2 meters below the surface. The dataset enabled us to identify the occurrence of summer hypoxia and an oxygen depletion zone in the Charente estuary. These results resulted in the implementation of high-frequency monitoring at Tonnay-Charente, operational since November 2020.

The ARCHYD dataset, which have been collected since 1988, represents the longest long-term hydrologic data sets in Arcachon Bay. The objectives of this monitoring programme are to assess the influence of oceanic and continental inputs on the water quality of the bay and their implications on biological processes. It also aims to estimate the effectiveness of management policies in the bay by providing information on trends and/or shifts in pressure, state, and impact variables. Sampling is carried on stations spread across the entire bay, but since 1988, the number and location of stations have changed slightly to better take into account the gradient of ocean and continental inputs. In 2005, the ARCHYD network was reduced to 8 stations that are still sampled by Ifremer to date. All the stations are sampled at a weekly frequency, at midday, alternately around the low spring tide and the high neap tide. Data are complementary to REPHY dataset. Physico-chemical measures include temperature, salinity, turbidity, suspended matters (organic, mineral), dissolved oxygen and dissolved inorganic nutrients (ammonium, nitrite+nitrate, phosphate, silicate). Biological measures include pigment proxies of phytoplankton biomass and state (chlorophyll a and phaeopigment).

The SOMLIT-Antioche observation station, located at 5 nautical miles from Chef de Baie harbor (La Rochelle) is part of the French monitoring network SOMLIT (https://www.somlit.fr/), accredited by the INSU-CNRS as a national Earth Science Observatory (Service National d’Observation : SNO), which comprises 12 observation stations distributed throughout France in coastal locations. It aims to detect long-term changes of these ecosystems under both natural and anthropogenic forcings. SOMLIT is part of the national research infrastructure for coastal ocean observation ILICO (https://www.ir-ilico.fr/?PagePrincipale&lang=en). The SOMLIT-Antioche station (46.0842 °N, 1.30833 °W) is located in the north-eastern part of the Bay of Biscay, halfway between the islands of Ré and Oléron, at the centre of what is commonly known as the Pertuis Charentais area, which correspond to a semi-enclosed shallow basin and includes four islands (Ré, Oléron, Aix and Madame) and three Pertuis (i.e., detroit) (Breton, Antioche and Maumusson). This 40m-deep site, with muddy to sandy marine bottoms, is submitted to a macro-tidal regime and is largely open to the prevailing westerly swells. It remains under a dominant oceanic/neritic influence, even though its winter/spring hydrological context is influenced by the diluted plumes of the Charente, Gironde and Loire rivers, but not by those of too small estuaries (Lay, Seudre and Sèvre Niortaise). SOMLIT-Antioche hydrological monitoring has been carried out by the LIENSs/OASU laboratory on a fortnightly basis since June 2011. Surface water samples are collected at high-tide during intermediate tides (70 ± 10 in SHOM units) on board the research vessel ‘L’Estran’ owned by La Rochelle University. Samples are analyzed for more than 16 core parameters: temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, phosphates, silicates, suspended matter, particulate organic carbone, particulate organic nitrogen, chlorophyll, delta15N, delta13C; pico- and nano- plankton. Measurements are carried out in accordance with the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard. Simultaneous monitoring of the micro-phytoplankton community (since 2013, SNO PHYTOBS: https://www.phytobs.fr/en) and monitoring of prokaryotic communities (Bacteria and Archaea) are also carried out on a monthly basis. Since 2019, seasonal observations of benthic invertebrate communities (SNO BenthObs : https://www.benthobs.fr/) have also been carried out. This monitoring is complementary to that carried out at hydrological stations in the pre-existing REPHY and DCE networks, some of which are located near marine farming areas (oyster and mussel farms).

The SOMLIT-SOGIR time-series data characterize the hydrology of the Gironde Estuary ecosystem, located in the South-western France and flowing into the Bay of Biscay. Monthly-like measurements have been undertaken since 1997 by the OASU and EPOC teams (Univ. Bordeaux/CNRS). The SOMLIT-SOGIR time series is a part of the French monitoring network SOMLIT (https://www.somlit.fr/), labelled by the CNRS as a national Earth Science Observatory (Service National d’Observation : SNO). It aims to detect the long-term evolution of monitored ecosystems including both natural and anthropogenic forcings. Implemented at three sites (PK 30: 45.06833°N, 0.63833°W; PK 52: 45.24667°N, 0.725°W; PK 86: 45.5167°N, 0.95°W), the SOMLIT-SOGIR time series is among the oldest long-term coastal observation time series of the French Research Infrastructure dedicated to coastal ocean observations (RI ILICO, https://www.ir-ilico.fr). SOMLIT-SOGIR samples are collected at 1m below the water surface and 1m above the floor, at high and low tide, during slack water. Samples collected are analysed for 15 core parameters: water temperature and salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, silicic acid, suspended particulate matter, particulate organic carbone, particulate nitrogen, chlorophyll a, delta15N and delta13C. CTD-PAR-profile is also performed at site PK86 during high tide. The SOMLIT network quality management system is in line with the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard: “General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories”. Further information on standard operating procedures for sample collection and data acquisition are available at: https://www.somlit.fr/parametres-et-protocoles. For more information on the quality flagging scheme: https://www.somlit.fr/codes-qualite/.
